Welcome!

I am a computational chemist. I develop the computational models of small molecules and chemical processes using quantum or classical mechanics in search of sustainable solutions. I also study the biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids and their interactions with small molecules. How the drug molecules work, how do they cease to work and how we can develop new drugs are the areas I am exploring through my research.

Short Bio

I was born and brought up in a small town of Kochbihar by the foothills of Himalayas. Not exactly at the foothills, though! We could see the mountains on the northern horizon in the morning light and in the afternoon dusk. I left that magical place at the age of seventeen. And during those seventeen years, I never went to the mountains. I wouldn't go to the mountains until very later. I came to Kolkata to study Physiology at Presidency College (now Presidency University). I graduated with honours from Presidency in the year 2008. In the last year of my college, I finally had the opportunity to tour those mountains I always wanted to see up close. After I graduated from Presidency, I completed my masters from the University of Calcutta in Biophysics and Molecular Biology and joined Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) to pursue research. I am the first person in my family to earn a PhD degree. My father would be proud I guess. He passed away when I was just a thirteen year old kid. Now, I live with my mother and two cats: Tuktuk and Motu. Besides research, I read literature a lot. Works by the authors from all over the world. I cannot read anything but Bengali, English and Hindi though. So, I rely only on the translated versions. For some time now, I am trying to learn French and Japanese. I am an avid fan of Linux. Ubuntu is my primary OS. My other interests also include network defence/ethical hacking. In July 2011, a few month after joining IICB, I found and immediately reported a potential security breach in their email server, which enabled any user to send emails pretending to be anyone or even using a non-existing email address. Even Google couldn't detect the hoax "from field" in their incoming emails. The email server was shut down and IICB moved their domain to Google. That was an achievement for a novice programmer like me. However, it is just a hobby. I support the open source movement and Wikipedia for making knowledge and tools free to those who seek. I also contribute to sustain and grow it.
